The Spiritual Hunger on Our Doorstep.
This weekend the halls at the KGV were filled with people searching for something. The New Age festival drew crowds of people offering and receiving tarot readings, crystals, energy healings, astrology, spirit guides, and all kinds of spiritual advice. Some were working in the industry. Many more were simply looking for help—guidance for life, hope for the future, healing for pain, or answers to questions that the modern world has not satisfied. And if this shows us anything, it is this: our culture is becoming spiritual again.
The Return of the Spiritual Search
For years we were told the modern world would become less religious. Science and technology would replace belief in the unseen. But that prediction has proven spectacularly wrong.
We are not less spiritual today—if anything we are spiritually hungry, searching for answers outside of ourselves.
You can see it everywhere: astrology apps, crystals in shops, tarot readings on social media, meditation retreats, energy healers, spirit guides. The language has changed, but the desire is ancient. People know there must be more than the material world.
Human beings cannot escape the sense that there is something beyond what we can see.
But spiritual hunger can easily be exploited.
If you walk through a New Age festival long enough, you quickly notice something: almost everything has a price tag. Readings cost money. Healings cost money. Courses cost money. Spiritual guidance is packaged, branded, and sold.
There is a reason the New Age industry is thriving. People are desperate for hope, and willing to pay for it.
The Hidden Reality
The thing is this: the Bible speaks very clearly about practices like divination, spirit guidance, and magic. It doesn’t dismiss them as harmless imagination. There are spiritual beings opposed to God—what Scripture calls demons. Their aim is not to help humanity flourish but to deceive us, to distract us, and ultimately to pull us away from the God who made us.
This is why the Bible consistently warns against practic
es like fortune telling, consulting spirits, or seeking supernatural power apart from God. They promise insight and control, but they lead us into spiritual deception.
Borrowed Power
Yet the Bible also tells us something important about these spiritual forces: their power is limited and borrowed. They are not equal to God. They are not independent rulers of the universe. Whatever influence they have exists only because God allows it. Their power is borrowed. They cannot create or sustain life. They cannot determine the final outcome of history. But they exist under the authority of the God who can. Their goal is not to lead people to truth but to convince us that we don’t need God at all.
The real New Age
When Jesus walked the earth, He essentially 'This is the New Kingdom, this is a new age.' Wherever he went Jesus brought newness of life, healing, power, kindness and guidance. But something remarkable happened whenever he encountered demons; they recognized him immediately. And they trembled. They begged him not to destroy them. They knew exactly who he was. In one moment recorded in the Gospels, the demons cried out:
“What have you to do with us, Jesus, Son of God?” (Mark 1:21-28)
They know the truth about Jesus. They know he is the true Lord. They know his authority is absolute. And they know their time is limited. Jesus brought in the new age where Evil, Satan and demons lost their grip on the world.
But it's not evil that Jesus came to destroy. Ironically, Jesus came to destroy himself. His mission was for death, his own death. He died as a substitute. He died so that humans who have looked for guidance and meaning EVERYWHERE except God, would have the chance to escape the outcome for such rebellion. Jesus provides a way back to God, not instead of God. He is the way, the hope, the life.
The Hope People Are Actually Looking For
This weekend in Glenorchy it was clear that people are searching for something deeper than what they have found in the ordinary routines of life. Those longings are real. They are deeply human. But the answer is not hidden in crystals, tarot cards, spirit guides, or magical energies. The answer is a person. Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the Lord of heaven and earth.
And he offers something the New Age never can: truth, forgiveness, and real life with the God who made us.
