Jesus heard that they had put him out, and upon finding him, said, “Do you believe in the
Son of Man?” He answered by saying, “And who is He, Sir, that I may believe in Him?”
Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He is the One who is talking with you.”
And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And he worshiped Him. (John 9v35)
The story of the blind man is much deeper than a simple story of Christ’s miraculous power.
They were all blind in the synagogue that day. The wonder of that miracle only led to
squabbling over the sabbath law and not to the Healer. All were blind in sin that day, even
the healed blind man could not see Jesus the Messiah thinking He was only a prophet, not
until Jesus came a second time to find and save him.
The one thing we learn from the parable of the 100 sheep is that the Good Shepherd will in
no circumstances allow one single sheep to be lost. He will look for them and find them no
matter where they are, or the deep sinful tangle they may have gotten into. We look no
further than the story of the prodigal son having wasted half the family fortune, look no
further than the shame of the woman at the well met by Jesus. Again, Zacheus the tax
collector, a powerful mafia figure in those days was paid a special visit by the Jesus.
And what about us dear reader, what sinful tangles did Christ rescue us from? Even today
we may find ourselves in the most awful of traps. If we are struggling in the stinging guilt
before our Lord because of our many sinful years, then this is the work of the Holy Spirit
revealing sin, waste no time, “I shall return to my Father.” Christ calls you to Himself. It’s
never too late, His mercy is just as vast now as it was when Christ shed His last drop of
blood. Psalm 86v5: For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to
all who call upon You. Even the thief on the cross was granted salvation with only hours to
live.
But Jesus sought out, found and revealed Himself (v35) to the “blind man” who now could
see, and he believed. However, in v40 “Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard
these things and said to Him, “Are we blind too?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you
would have no sin; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.” Even though the
Pharisees heard Jesus proclaim once again he is the “Son of Man” they were unable to
believe, they could not hear. The blind man received mercy having heard the call of Christ
and was saved.
Blessed are you dear reader if you have been sought out, heard Jesus call your name giving
you eternal life, then you are one of His sheep. Just like the many happy millions who have
preceded you. You may ask “how can I know He will welcome me?” Christ Himself says dear
saint in John 6v37: “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to
me I will never drive away.” He says from His own mouth “I will never drive you away.”
Come to Christ now even in your blackest sin and receive mercy.
