Easter 2026

Hey there, Pastor of City North Church here. I was about to go ahead and post our Easter service times, but I thought that was a bit boring—so I decided to answer the 3 most common questions about Easter right now:
When is it?
What is it?
Is it pagan or Christian?
So here goes…
When is Easter?
In Tassie, Good Friday is the 3rd of April and Easter Sunday is the 5th of April.
But the question you're probably really asking is, “When do the Easter holidays start?” This year they run from the 18th of April to the 3rd of May, which means the Easter weekend is actually a week before school holidays.
What is Easter?
As a Christian, I celebrate Easter—it’s a celebration, a reminder, and an assurance of my faith.
The Friday (Good Friday) remembers that my Saviour, Jesus Christ, died. We call it “good” because his death is good. It is a death that brings life for those of us who believe.
I believe that I am worthy of God’s punishment—I have disobeyed him and rejected him. But the whole point of Jesus’ perfect life was to die in my place instead of me, so that I don’t have to be punished by God. Jesus took my punishment, and that is GOOD. That’s what Friday is about.
The Sunday is about new life. I’m pretty sure that’s where the eggs come from.
We bring chocolate eggs to church on Sunday because they look like an empty tomb. As a kid, I always wanted solid eggs because there’s more chocolate—but my Christian grandma would say, “Nope, they’re hollow because the tomb is hollow.”
What she meant was that the eggs remind us of Jesus’ empty (hollow) tomb. Jesus didn’t stay dead, but rose to life. We sing, “death could not hold him down,” meaning that he was powerful enough to rise from the dead. Anyone who believes in him will also live, even after our physical death, because Jesus gives us resurrection too.
So, apart from a holiday and an extra church service, Easter is a weekend remembering Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Is Easter Pagan?
Nope. That’s a really common—but pretty weak—argument that’s become popular recently.
I’ve heard people say Christians don’t even realise they’re celebrating pagan festivals at Christmas and Easter. But those arguments are mostly online noise and have no real grounding in history. (Basing arguments on poor history is more “pagan” than Easter, that’s for sure.)
Here’s a helpful video someone smarter than me did on the topic.
But if you came here looking for our church times and instead got an average blog about Easter… my apologies… kinda.
